Wk 3: Skills and Techniques
This week we began our filming of our short film. It was a process that many of us in the group had not been involved in before. The first obstacle was figuring out what scenes to shoot first. The second was simply choosing how to shoot each scene. In this lesson Ellen was our camera man and I was the director. Despite the obstacles this was a very fun process. Choosing angles, shot lengths, settings and props were all a very exciting part creating a short film.
However throughout doing this I realised the importance of students have background knowledge on using a camera as well as how to achieve different angles and shots. We did have some introduction to this in our tutorials but mostly it was our natural instinct in using a camera that allowed us to vary our shots. Students may not necessarily have these skills, depending on their prior knowledge and experiences.
Therefore it became clear how important the introduction lessons are in leading up to using the camera in order to close the gap between those who have experience with cameras and those who don't. Also making sure students have enough background knowledge with a camera that they can make informed decisions when creating the film.
