Wk 8: Integrating Music in the wider curriculum

In this class we discussed ways that music can be incorporated into other curriculum areas. After brainstorming as a class on ideas/lessons/activities of how this could bne done it clear to see how easily music can be adapted across all key learning areas. In the article 'A descriptive study of middle school teachers' current perspectives on and teacher practices for integrating music in public school curriculum' it is said that providing students with the "opportunities to explore interests beyond the traditional core curricula" (Shirrlian Lee-Holmes, 2008, p. 3) is paramount to encouraging the development of all students across a variety of subject areas.

Lesson ideas from the tutorial

I think most importantly what I realised during this tutorial was not only how widely music can be used but how important it is in creating an engaging classroom. Music is quite often used for an outlet, for relaxation, or as a stimulus, building upon these ideas I think music can be extremely useful in helping students to express ideas and opinions that they may not otherwise have the courage or words to communicate. Music allows someone to develop their own creatively as well as explore new ideas and concepts through a medium that is comfortable and inviting.
